Year 1 Phonics Test

What is the Year 1 phonics test?

The phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard for their success in reading. It is a government requirement and the data is recorded by the Department for Education.

This test will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that schools can track children until they are able to decode.

The reading scheme we employ (Read Write Inc.) has a structured approach to teaching synthetic phonics and is approved by the Educational Department. The children at Braywood perform extremely well on this scheme and by the time they leave us the vast majority of children are reading beyond the expected level for their age.

Our results always range between 93% to 100% which is extremely impressive. This is due to our highly trained staff who conduct small phonics groups to ensure that the vast majority of children are equipped with the basic in reading by the end of Year 1.
